Even as the Hari Raya celebrations draw to a close, the festive spirit continues to linger in the air—especially with the arrival of a sweet and zesty guest from Taiwan. Making its Malaysian debut with flair is the Taichung Murcott, a premium citrus fruit known for its thin skin, juicy flesh, and fragrant aroma.
This exciting launch comes through a delightful collaboration between the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City and Restaurant Caterbest, a renowned halal Chinese restaurant located in Ipoh. Together, they’ve crafted an exclusive lineup of seasonal dishes that add a vibrant citrus twist to the traditional Raya table.

A Celebration of Citrus and Culture with Taichung Murcott
The official launch of the Taichung Murcott was held on April 11, in a press conference that welcomed several distinguished guests. Among them were Mr. James Chang, Director of the Economic Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia; Ms. Eva Peng, Director of the Taiwan Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur; and Ms. Tsai Hsin Tien, National Vice President of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Malaysia.

These leaders gathered to celebrate not only the arrival of Taiwan’s beloved fruit to Malaysia, but also the strengthening of agricultural and cultural ties between the two nations.
Why the Taichung Murcott Stands Out?

According to Mr. Fu Yu-Chin, Director of the Marketing Department at the Shigang District Farmers’ Association, the Murcott is one of Shigang’s most iconic fruits. Its popularity stems from its naturally sweet and juicy profile—making it a refreshing, healthy snack suitable for all ages, all year round.
To ensure quality and consumer confidence, Murcotts from Shigang are certified under GlobalG.A.P. and ISO 22000, meeting international standards for food safety and agricultural best practices. The first shipment to Malaysia arrived on March 3rd, with more exports lined up for Singapore, Canada, and other selected markets. In total, 150 metric tons of Murcotts are expected to be exported this year alone.
A Fresh Twist on Malaysian Cuisine

At the heart of the launch event was a joyful, hands-on “peeling challenge” where guests tried to peel the fruit by hand without getting their fingers wet—a testament to the Murcott’s famously thin skin. The challenge sparked plenty of laughs and impressed attendees with the fruit’s convenience.

But the real showstopper? A beautifully crafted signature dish called “When Life Gives You Murcott.” This citrus-infused stir-fried chicken was specially developed by the talented culinary team at Restaurant Caterbest, blending the Murcott’s bright, tangy notes with savoury Chinese flavours. The result was a refreshing, mouth-watering dish that quickly became the crowd favourite.
A Culinary Story Rooted in Heritage
Restaurant Caterbest, with over 20 years of experience serving authentic halal Chinese cuisine, has hosted Malaysian icons such as Oscar-winning actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh and Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
